How can you make a ski turn in the snow? You can pressure it, you can put it up on edge and you can rotate it. A successful ski racer must be able to blend these three actions in the most efficient way possible on every turn to achieve the fastest time. The skier can most effectively control these actions when they are in balance over their skis.
This is the basis for the four skill areas in the SkillsQuest Skiing Assessment. Each developmental phase has an exercise for each of the skill areas: pressure, edging, rotary and balance. The exercises are progressive, getting more difficult to achieve mastery as the skier moves to the next developmental phase. This helps the athlete and coach continue to focus and improve on their full skill set. Certain exercises blend in additional ski racing attributes, such as aerodynamics and jumping abilities. Together, the exercises within SkillsQuest represent a complete fundamentals-based approach to ski racing skills. Combined with tactics and competition strategies, a ski racer will have a foundation for success in racing!
Click on the skill area tabs above for the progression of exercises. Coaches may use exercises up and down the phases within a skill area for training progressions, but the goal for the athletes should be to achieve mastery in a phase before working extensively at the next level.
"Today the difference in winning or losing is tenths or even hundredths of a second which is the difference in a few degrees of rotation, a degree or two of edge angle and where the ski is pressured. These are all very small and sometimes imperceptible amounts. SkillsQuest drills allow the skier to learn to make these minute adjustments unconsciously." -Ron Kipp, USSA Alpine Sport Education Manager
