Kelly Clark leads four U.S. Snowboarding athletes into the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix finals.
COPPER MOUNTAIN, CO. (Dec. 10) — Olympic champion Kelly Clark (West Dover, VT) qualified second to lead a field of four U.S. Snowboarding teammates into the eight person finals at the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Copper Mountain. The roster of eight was dwindled down from nearly 50 gunning for the money round. Rookie Maddy Schaffrick (Steamboat Springs, CO) upped her game, qualifying fourth, in her first competition back after a year-and-a-half off from injury. Joining Clark and Schaffrick in finals are Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) and last year's defending champ Kaitlyn Farrington (Sun Valley, ID). Women's and men's halfpipe snowboarding finals start at noon. Spain's Quera Castellet led qualifying.
QUOTES Kelly Clark It's great to come out and stand up two good runs in qualifiers. I'm looking forward to finals. The level of riding is really high today for the women and I think it's going to be a great show. Some of the women are riding very well and I think it's really high level of competition so it's a privilege to be a part of it and I'm excited for finals.
Maddy Schaffrick I was super nervous this morning. This is my first contest in a year and a half coming back from a knee injury, so I was literally going to throw up at the top but it feels so good to get the first couple of runs done and I'm super excited for finals. The pipe is fast today but I'm so excited- I'm having an out-of-body experience!
