OFTERSCHWANG, Germany (March 9) - Birthday girl Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) battled wet snow and flat light to finish eighth in the Ofterschwang giant slalom. Austria’s Anna Finninger took control of third in the Audi FIS Alipine World Cup overall standings with the victory, while regulating Tina Maze of Slovenia to second. Maze had already secured the World Cup overall and giant slalom titles prior to the race, but still posted another record becoming the first woman in history with eight giant slalom podium finishes in a season.
Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) finished eighth in the Ofterschwang GS keeping her within reach of a top three finish in the overall World Cup standings.
Austria’s Anna Finninger won the race for the third giant slalom win of her career.
Slovenia's Tina Maze finished second, making her the first woman in history to earn eight GS podium finishes in one season.
Maze had already secured the overall and giant slalom titles prior to the race.
Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) went out in the first run after she caught air over a roller and couldn’t get the direction back to the left foot gate.
Shiffrin, the newly crowned slalom World Champion, returns to action Sunday for a slalom where she has a 33 point lead in the discipline standings over Maze.
Universal Sports Network will broadcast the race at 11:30 a.m. ET.
QUOTES Julia Mancuso It was a really good start, a step in the right direction for GS for me. I still need to make two good runs, but I’m happy. They did a good job of keeping the course okay. It was actually one of the better surfaces we’ve had this year. Second run was a lot turnier, so it deteriorated more and was difficult for racers starting in the back, but I’m happy.
The started out a little rough while I was trying to dial the equipment in, but things got a little better halfway through the season. And now I’m just looking forward to next year because I know I have a good base. I’m looking forward to working hard this summer and being fast at the beginning of the year too.
I want to win a race this year, so that’s my first goal. To be in a chase for a globe is always a dream of mine. I really want to win a globe. I think that if I can win a race that goal will also come true. Right now I’m just focusing on one race at a time. I want to win that super G in Lenzerheide.
