Competition

The Competition section of the USSA Training Systems outlines the suggested competition series at each developmental phase for the high performance athlete. Athlete and coach should identify a target competition series or event(s) at the start of the season. In many cases, especially as athletes get older, there are a lot competition options. As highlighted in the Age and Participation section of the Training Systems, it is important to keep a balanced training to competition ratio for athletes to make improvements. By identifying a target, informed decisions can be made about whether to attend a certain event.

Competition should validate training. Competition is much more meaningful when the athlete has prepared and the competition level is appropriate for their abilities. It is thrilling to take part in skiing and snowboard competition. Many skiers and riders participate because they love to compete. From a long-term development perspective however, competition results aren't necessarily indicative of future potential. Making the right decisions about competition can effect the athlete's self-confidence, motivation and enjoyment of sport.

Check the tabs above to learn more about the competition emphasis for each development phase.
