The Equipment Selection and Preparation area of the USSA Training Systems outlines developmentally appropriate equipment guidelines for athletes in each phase. Selecting the right equipment can have a significant impact on a skier's or rider's development. For example, skiing or riding in boots that are too big force the athlete to compensate by moving into inefficient positions to remain in balance. These movement patterns become learned, and then must be unlearned later when put in proper equipment. The recommendations here should serve as guidelines. Seek the help of your club coaches to additional advice.
Once equipment has been purchased, taking good care of that equipment is another important factor for success. Maintaining equipment can be an expensive and time consuming process. It is important to know when such an investment is necessary and at what point the responsibilities for maintenance transfer from a parent or shop to the athlete.
In addition, it is important to be aware of the equipment regulations for your sport which are generally specific to age or competitive level.
