Hernandez 6th in Snowboardcross Opener

MONTAFON, Austria (Dec. 7) – Second-year U.S. Snowboarding athlete Jackie Hernandez (Londonderry, VT) finished sixth and posted the top spot for the U.S. during the snowboardcross World Cup season opener on Saturday. Olympic medalist Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT) won the small final race and finished seventh in her first snowboardcross event in nearly two years. Czech rider Eva Samkova took the victory for the women. In the men’s snowboardcross opener, Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, MA) took the top spot for the U.S. in 13th while Markus Schairer of Austria won the race. On Sunday the riders take to the Montafon course again to race men’s and women’s team snowboardcross.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Despite not finishing the final heat, second-year U.S. Snowboarding athlete Jackie Hernandez (Londonderry, VT) finished sixth and posted the top spot for the U.S. during the snowboardcross World Cup season opener on Saturday.
  • Olympic medalist Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT) won the small final race and finished seventh in her first snowboardcross event in nearly two years.
  • Jacobellis came out on top of each heat she entered with the exception of the semi-final, where she crashed and was bumped into the small final. She won her final with authority.
  • U.S. Snowboarding teammates Callan Chythlook-Sifsof (Girdwood, AK), Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City, UT) and Brooke Shaw (Litchfield, CT) finished 19th, 22nd and 30th respectively.
  • Czech rider Eva Samkova took the victory for the women.
  • In the men’s snowboardcross opener, Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, MA) took the top spot for the U.S. in 13th while Hagen Kearney (Telluride, CO) finished 14th.
  • There were six top-30 U.S. results on the men’s side including Robert Minghini (Snowshoe, WV) in 16th, Mick Dierdorff (Steamboat Springs, CO) in 17th, Alex Tuttle (Sugarloaf, ME) in 27th and Trevor Jacob (Mammoth Lakes, CA) in 29th.
  • Olympian Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) crashed into a gate and finished 43rd.
  • Markus Schairer of Austria won the men’s race.
  • On Sunday the riders take to the Montafon course again to race men’s and women’s team snowboardcross.

It's great to have Lindsey back after two years and she's racing great. She won the early rounds by a mile and had an unfortunate crash in the round of twelve and then won the small final by a mile, which is great to see.

It's hard not having Wescott and Holland here, we're all really looking forward to having them back on snow and back with the team.
