This section will be revised at the end of 2015 in preparation for the 2016 nomination and election process.

December 18, 2012

The election for the USOC Athletes' Advisory Council position concluded and Howard 'Chip' Knight won the election to be the USSA's representative on the Council.  The USOC AAC bylaws mandate that “in sports in which separate men’s and women’s teams are represented by a single NGB, the representative and the alternate must be of opposite sexes.”  Grete Eliassen is the alternate.  If the USSA's representative is unable to attend an AAC meeting or other official function, as alternate, she will take that role.  The first meeting of the new USOC AAC is January, 2013.

Dear U.S. Ski and Snowboard Olympic and/or World Championship Team Athletes and Alumni:

Following is a nomination request for election of the USSA's representative to the United States Olympic Committee Athletes’ Advisory Council.  Review the materials enclosed and consider nominating yourself or another athlete who qualifies for nomination to be the USSA's USOC AAC representative; the nomination form is due no later than July 16.  If you nominate others, contact the nominee(s) to confirm that they are interested in the position.  Remember, no paid employee of the USSA or the USOC is eligible.

Please provide your biographical information, the reasons why you would like to serve on the USOC Athletes’ Advisory Council and outline any skills and capabilities that would qualify you for this role (A statement of interest form follows).  The information provided will be added to the ballot.  After all nominations are received, the ballot will follow in July.

The right to nominate and vote is restricted to athletes who have competed at the Olympic Games, World Championships or Operation Gold designated competition within the preceding ten years as measured from the first AAC meeting of the quadrennium (January 2013).  The representative you elect will be the National Governing Body voice at the U.S. Olympic Committee for skiing and snowboarding athletes and a voice for all athletes within the USOC on issues such as doping control, financial support for athletes, commercial terms/athlete marketing, and athletes' rights in team selection.  The term of service is four years, commencing January of 2013 and ending in December of 2016.

While an athlete’s competitive record can afford him or her additional credentials, this is not a celebrity position.  A representative's ability to work well within the USSA and USOC organizations, to think critically about issues, to communicate and advocate effectively and to dedicate the necessary time will be essential in serving both the USSA and USOC athletes.

Thank you for taking the time to nominate yourself for the position.

With best regards,

Andrew Johnson

USOC Athletes' Advisory Council Representative
